REENTRY MAPPING NETWORK PARTNER PROJECT
The Providence Plan Research Topic The Providence Plan will use GIS to examine: (1) the geographic distribution and concentration of parolees and probationers; (2) the effect of ex-offenders' residential mobility on their likelihood of staying out of prison and accessing services; and (3) strategies for providing ex-offenders with a network of community resources (i.e. housing, jobs, substance-abuse treatment, and other social services). The results of this research will assist the Department of Corrections in making decisions on allocating staff and other resources, improving the efficiency and efficacy of community supervision. This information will also be used to improve the services delivered to ex-offenders, thereby strengthening their reintegration back into family and community life. Data The Providence Plan has, in hand, parcel-level crime data and address-level indicators of community well being (education, employment, social service, and public transportation). The Rhode Island Department of Corrections has agreed to provide the Providence Plan with demographic and incarceration data that includes ex-offenders' addresses, and the Family Life Center has agreed to provide them with reentry data that includes updated address information. Strategy to Engage the Community The Providence Plan will partner with the Family Life Center, the primary community-based organization working with ex-offenders and their families in Providence. The Family Life Center will lead the project's community-organizing activities. Visit the Providence Plan website at http://provplan.org. |
